    Can You Believe It's Friday?

Questions courtesy of Jennifer this week; thanks, Jennifer!

    1. Birthdays are a great time to treat yourself right.

    2. Autumn is my favorite season because the weather begins to turn cooler and leaves start to change colors. The holidays are still ahead of me and yet they are close enough to touch. The end of the year is in reach. The World Series. There is a certain something in the air that makes me feel cozy and comfy during the fall season.

    3. I feel my best when I am well rested, feel confident, and am doing something I enjoy.

    4. Barbeque chicken pizza is my favorite food!

    5. First impressions are sometimes deceiving.

    6. The best piece of advice I ever received was that life shouldn't always be taken so seriously.

    7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to cuddling with my dog and torturing my cat with hugs and nuzzles; tomorrow my plans include spending time with my family and Sunday, I want to feel the sand beneath my toes as I walk along the beach!

    Appetizer

What is the weather like today where you live?

Summer is definitely here. Temperatures went from scorching triple digits last week to the mid-9o's this week. For the past couple of mornings, I have been greeted by fog and a gentle mist when I head out for work, which has been a pleasant change. It isn't long before the sun burns right through and claims the day.

    Soup

On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being highest, how career-minded are you?

I probably fall somewhere around an eight.

    Salad

What type of window coverings do you have in your home? Blinds, curtains, shutters, etc.?

There are blinds in some windows and curtains in others.

    Main Course

Name something that instantly cheers you up.

The sight of a book in the mailbox or sitting on th back walkway when I get home from work.

    Dessert

How many times do you hit the snooze button on a typical morning?

Lately I have been pushing it once on those mornings I have to wake up to my alarm.

Fun on a Too Hot Friday

    1. A smile is a great way to greet a friend.

    2. Cribbage is my favorite board or card game.

    3. I would love to have more peace in my life and less chaos.

    4. When I think of the Summer Solstice, I think of heat, watermelon and barefeet.

    5. I just remembered I need to pull the clothes out of the dryer.

    6. One of my favorite song lyrics goes like this:
    If you're going through hell
Keep on going, don't slow down
If you're scared, don't show it
    You might get out
Before the devil even knows you're there.

    7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to visiting my friends in blogland and catching up on some reading; tomorrow my plans include going to see Get Smart at the movie theater; and Sunday, I want to stay cool inside!

    Appetizer

If you could live on another continent for 1 year, which one would you choose?

I would love the opportunity to live and travel in Australia for a year. Or maybe Europe. I cannot decide.

    Soup

Which browser do you use to surf the Internet?

    I use Firefox.

    Salad

On a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being highest), how much do you know about the history of your country?

Sometimes I feel like I know quite a bit about my own country and other times, I seem to know so little at all. So, maybe a 5?

    Main Course

Finish this sentence: Love is . . .

    Complex.

    Dessert

Have you ever been in or near a tornado?

Last month there were a couple of tornadoes that touched down not too far from where I work. I was completely unaware of it until I heard it on the news later that night, however. Tornadoes are very rare in California.

    More Friday Fun

    1. Reading all of the books in my TBR room is high up on my bucket list.
    2. My favorite quote is "Fiction reveals truth that reality obscures"; it's from Jessamyn West.
    3. My husband not only encouraged but also inspired me to start blogging.
    4. Strawberries are best in a smoothie.
    5. I scaled down the side of Florinda's blog, waving to her as I went by in the last dream I remember having. It looked like a giant computer tower.
    6. The most enjoyable time to go for a walk is in the early evening when the temperature is cooler and the sun has yet to set.
    7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to going to bed early; tomorrow my plans include finishing Michelle Moran's novel, Nefertiti, if I haven't already by then; and Sunday, I want to be completely over this cold! I actually am suffering from laryngitis at the moment too, which is kind of fun. I like talking like a frog. My husband is getting tired of me testing my voice to see if I am still hoarse. Let's not talk about my embarrassing moment when I had a coughing fit during jury selection yesterday. Hopefully today will go better (when I'm squawking out answers to attorney's questions).

    Appetizer

Do you consider yourself to be an optimist or a pessimist?

I am a realist with optimistic leanings.

    Soup

What is your favorite color of ink to write with?

I can't say I have a favorite color of ink. In one of my previous positions, a couple of my staff often joked that the reports I returned to them for corrections were dripping in alien blood. I tend to be more traditional these days, sticking with black or blue ink. Whatever is handy and people can read easily.

    Salad

How often do you get a manicure or pedicure? Do you do them yourself or go to a salon and pay for them?

It has been years since I got a manicure or a pedicure. I am a minimalist when it comes to my nails these days. I trim them when necessary and do little else with them.

    Main Course

Have you ever won anything online? If so, what was it?

Books seem to be about the only thing I ever win in a contest, online or otherwise. If you believe the e-mails I receive sometimes in my spam folder, I have won the U.K. Lottery a number of times. I haven't seen a dime.

    Dessert

In which room in your house do you keep your home computer?

You would think that because I now have a laptop, I would take it with me all over the house. Not so much. I haven't gotten used to the fact that my computer is mobile yet. It pretty much stays in my husband's and my home office, otherwise known as the computer room.

    Just Another Friday
Questions courtesy of One Knutty Knitter; thank you, Knutty!

    1. Idle hands are itching for a book.

    2. I love to read in the shower. I just can't--soggy book and all that. If only I could keep the book dry . . .

    3. My favorite time of the day is when the UPS man arrives. He's like a daily Santa Claus.

    4. The last tea I drank was warm and soothing.

    5. I like to go to baseball games in the summer.

    6. My mother always said the best walks are often taken in the pouring rain.

    7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to spending a quiet evening with my husband and our furkids; tomorrow my plans include celebrating my husband's birthday and entertaining my in-laws and Sunday, I want to enjoy a decent breakfast with our company before they head home and then spend the afternoon lost in a book!

    Appetizer

When you drink soda/pop/coke, do you prefer to drink it from the bottle, a can, or after pouring it into a cup?

I do not drink soda of any kind anymore. When I did, I preferred it in a glass glass over ice. Sometimes I would crave an ice cold bottle of root beer.

    Soup

What television show are you willing to stay up late to watch?

None. With the advent of digital recorders, I no longer have to give up my precious sleep for a favorite television show. Even when a show is on at a decent hour, I tend to record it and watch it later or at least get it started late so I can fast forward through all of the commercials.

    Salad

Name one person, place, or thing you think of as brilliant.

    Books.

    Main Course

Would you be willing to work 4 10-hour days instead of 5 8-hour days in order to save gas?

This has recently come up as an idea for staff at the agency I work for. Whether it's going to be adopted or not is still up in the air. I am more than willing to work a 4/10 schedule. As it is, I currently work a 9/80 schedule, meaning that I work 9 hours Monday through Thursday and then 8 hours alternating Fridays, with three day weekends every other week. Considering how much overtime I put in, an extra hour a day will not make much of a different. It sure would be nice to have three days off every week though!

    Dessert

If you were a superhero, what would you call yourself?

Why, the Literary Feline, of course! I could swoop in when there is a biblio-emergency and save the day. Stuck somewhere with nothing to read? Found the last few pages missing from your book? Accidentally dropped your book in a bucket of water? Realized the only book you have on hand is one you have already read--or worse, one you wish you had never picked up? Just give a shout out for the Literary Feline!

    TGIF: Friday Fill-Ins
Questions courtesy of MindFul Mimi who had some thought- provoking ones this week; thank you, Mimi!

    1. For me monotony is the opposite of creativity.

    2. Broken For You by Stephanie Kallos was the last excellent book I read. (based on a look back of my last 5 star rating)

    3. I like fill-ins because they are simple yet thought provoking and are a great way to sign off the work week.

    4. In nature I like looking at all there is to see! I especially love being surrounded by trees near a mountain lake with little critters and deer wandering about.

    5. The best candidate should win the US election.

    6. The last time I laughed with all my belly was I was pretending to be Santa Claus.

    7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to doing a little blog hopping and reading; tomorrow my plans include figuring out how to hook my laptop up to the printer; and Sunday, I want to laze around the house and read in typical Literary Feline fashion!

    1. There is absolutely NO way you can get me to bungee jump!
    2. These triple digit temperatures we have been having lately remind me that summer is almost here!
    3. I cannot live without my heart.
    4. Snorkeling and going to a hockey game are two things I'd like to try.
    5. When life hands you lemons make a lemon pie.
    6. Playing soccer in the rain is one of my favorite childhood memories.
    7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to getting a good night's sleep, tomorrow my plans include seeing the second Chronicles of Narnia movie and Sunday, I want to catch up on Lost and Grey's Anatomy!

    Appetizer

What is the nearest big city to your home?

    Los Angeles, California

    Soup

On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being highest, how well do you keep secrets?

I am supposed to keep secrets? Oops.

Some secrets I refuse to keep. Others I keep quite well, except maybe from my husband. Most people say he doesn't count when I warn them that I share just about everything with him. I suppose though that since they know I'm likely to tell him, it really isn't breaking a confidence, is it?

    Salad

Describe your hair (color, texture, length).

My hair is dark brown in color and falls just below my chin in a bob style cut. I have slightly wavy hair.

    Main Course

What kind of driver are you? Courteous? Aggressive? Slow?

I tend to fall on the courteous side of the spectrum, however, it does not pay to be too courteous on the roads in Southern California or else you will not make it very far--too many other drivers are quite aggressive, you see. I also admit that sometimes I will drive slow when someone is riding my bumper in the slow lane when the fast lane is open and clear. I sometimes do speed. Don't tell anyone though, okay?

    Dessert

When was the last time you had a really bad week?

A better question would be when have I had a really good week. I guess the worst of the worst recently would have been that awful week in March. Heck, the entire month of March was rotten.

    Broken Windows and Frequent Smiles
Questions courtesy of Julie this week; if you'd like to leave some for future use, I'd love it!

    1. The Christmas cookies my family made every holiday season while I was growing up had an extra secret ingredient; it was, and still is, a well kept secret!
    2. The baseball went right through my window.
    3. Right now, I need something to eat. I haven't had anything to eat since a tiny bit of breakfast eaten while I was running out the door.
    4. The Yard House is where I went Thursday night; it was not too crowded and the food was delicious.
    5. Why does a paper cut hurt so much?
    6. All I can think of is dinner tonight.
    7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to punishing my cat with a lot of corporal cuddling, tomorrow my plans include whatever comes to mind that day and Sunday, I want to catch up on my reading!

    Appetizer

When someone smiles at you, do you smile back?

Yes, I do. I am naturally a friendly person, and if I catch someone's eye, I usually will smile.

    Soup

Describe the flooring in your home. Do you have carpet, hardwood, vinyl, a mix?

I have beige carpeting throughout my house. Linoleum covers the floors in my kitchen and bathrooms.

    Salad

Write a sentence with only 5 words, but all of the words have to start with the first letter of your first name.

    We went without warm water.

    Main Course

Do you know anyone whose life has been touched by adoption?

Oh yes! Quite a few people, both in my personal and professional lives. I suppose I could even say that my own life has been touched by adoption as a result.

    Dessert

    Name 2 blue things.

My tissue box and the flowers on a bell which are both sitting on my desk.

Friday: Fill Ins and A Day for Feasting

    1. Two of my favorite ingredients in a drink are lemon and ice! Ice water with a touch of lemon is perfect on a warm spring day like this. Or maybe even a tall glass of lemonade . . . Yum!
    2. The things I encounter at work often amaze me. And not necessarily in a good way.
    3. You can keep doing that (throwing the ball) forever, the dog is obsessed with playing fetch.
    4. Hot water and cocoa powder, mix it all together and voila! You have hot chocolate!
    5. If I had a yard with a garden, I would love to grow anything at all that might live longer than a week or so. I have a brown thumb, remember?
    6. Steaming hot biscuits are best au naturel.
    7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to watching the third episode of The Dresden Files, tomorrow my plans include possibly taking in a movie and Sunday, I want to do a little reading!

    Appetizer

What was your favorite cartoon when you were a child?

Saturday morning cartoons were always a favorite of mine. My brother and I would wake up early and fight over which cartoons we would watch (He always wanted to watch the Smurfs). We watched a few cartoons during the week, but not many. Sundays were slim pickings for cartoons, but we always managed to find one or two to keep us occupied. My favorite cartoons included Mighty Mouse (I had such a crush on him!), Tom and Jerry, Tweety and Sylvester, Woody Woodpecker, Richie Rich, the Super Friends, and the Flintstones. My eighth grade year, my friend and I were big fans of She-Ra. We used to watch it every morning before catching the bus to go to school. And to think I couldn't think of any when I first came across this question!

    Soup

Pretend you are about to get a new pet. Which animal would you pick, and what would you name it?

My first inclination would be to add a new cat to the family, but I do think a dog might be better able to adjust to my motley crew. A lot would depend on the animal's temperament and how he or she gets along with my other animals. My husband and I often joke that we follow the (unintentional) tradition of naming our pets after Buffy the Vampire Slayer's leading men. We still need a Spike and an Angel.

    Salad

On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being highest, how much do you enjoy getting all dressed up for a special occasion?

As long as I have something to wear, I enjoy getting dressed up now and then. A lot would depend on what I was getting dressed up for. If it's dinner, I would take casual over fancy any day. If it's a wedding or some other important event, then I'll dress up happily. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would probably say my enjoyment for getting dressed up is about a 6.

    Main Course

What kind of music do you listen to while you drive?

I am a frequent radio channel changer, especially when I am alone in the car (I don't usually flip channels when in the company of others). I go between a couple of country music stations and three rock/pop stations that play a variety of music from oldies on up to more contemporary music.

    Dessert

When was the last time you bought a clock? And in which room did you put it?

I love timepieces. I collect miniature clocks, as a matter of fact. Most are gifts I have received over the years. It has been awhile since I actually bought a clock for myself, and so I could not tell you when that was. I bought a watch last year around this time, I know. I really like watches too.

Booking Through Thursday: Springing, Friday Fill Ins & 123 Meme

Do your reading habits change in the spring? Do you read gardening books? Even if you don’t have a garden? More light fiction than during the winter? Less? Travel books? Light paperbacks you can stick in a knapsack?

Or do you pretty much read the same kinds of things in the spring as you do the rest of the year?

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of spring is allergies. Although I have year round allergies, they seem to act up even more so during the spring. Sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes and killer sinus headaches . . . You would think this would cause me to dread the coming of spring each year, however, far from it. I love the longer days, seeing the flowers in bloom, leisurely walks, pleasant weather, and the general buzz of excitement that spring always seems to carry with it. I am sure spring is one of my dog's favorite times of year as he wants to spend much more time outdoors, lounging on the grass and taking in the rays. My cat hates the spring, however, because he's stuck inside staring longingly out the window, wishing he could be rolling in the grass next to the dog.

Despite what many people say, there are signs of a season's change in Southern California, however slight. Having lived in the state most of my life and being a natural observer, there is a definite change in the air and in the life cycle around us. Unless you live in the mountains, the changes are not nearly as extreme here as they are in other parts of the country, certainly. That is fine by me. This literary feline is not a snowbird. I am quite content with a less dramatic climate.

Perhaps that plays a part in my reading as well. The less distinctive seasons, the less change in reading habits to coincide with them. I am not a seasonal reader. Going from winter into the spring does not inspire me to read any particular type of book nor draw me to any one topic. My reading patterns change now and then as my interests ebb and flow, but they cannot be set by the calendar.

    1. When I fell in love, I knew it would be forever.
    2. It's time to break out the spring clothing when the flowers bloom and it heats up outside!
    3. Oh no! The internet connection is down, what a perfect opportunity jump back into that book I was reading!
    4. Lost is the craziest television show ever. (and I love it!)
    5. Cheese and macaroni make a great meal!
    6. I would love to have a garden, but I have a brown thumb.
    7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to getting a good night's sleep in preparation for the weekend; tomorrow my plans include spending the day at the L.A. Times Festival of Books; and Sunday, I want to go back for more fun!

Clea Simon was kind enough to tag me for the 123 meme.

    1. Pick up the nearest book.
    2. Open to page 123.
    3. Find the fifth sentence.
    4. Post the next three sentences.
    5. Tag five people, and acknowledge who tagged you.

Well, the nearest book happens to be Cecilia Samartin's Tarnished Beauty and I am afraid that page 123 only has two and a half sentences. A catalog of summer fashions does not quite fit the bill, does it?

An excerpt from the novella, "The Hundred and Ninety-Nine Steps," from Michel Faber's The Courage Consort:
He was carrying a large plastic bag, but apart from that he looked like a young doctor who'd answered his beeper at a London brasserie and been persuaded to make a house call. Sian had trouble accepting he could look like this; she'd imagined him (she realised now) permanently dressed in shorts and T-shirt, running around Whitby in endless circles. She laughed at the thought, her inhibitions loosened by the excesses she was indulging in with Hadrian.
This is one of those memes that goes round and round, but each time can result in a different answer. I will not tag anyone in particular, but feel free to play along!

Booking Through Thursday: Vocabulary & Friday Fill Ins
    Suggested by Nithin:

I’ve always wondered what other people do when they come across a word/phrase that they’ve never heard before. I mean, do they jot it down on paper so they can look it up later, or do they stop reading to look it up on the dictionary/google it or do they just continue reading and forget about the word?

Some days I am more lazy than others. If I can figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word from the context it is used, I am less likely to pursue looking any further. If I have the computer or a dictionary handy when I am reading, I will look up any words I am uncertain about and cannot figure out on my own. Sometimes I just ask my husband who I have come to think of as a walking dictionary among other things. When stuck without any of those resources and no one else I would willingly bug, I continue reading. If I remember to look it up later, great. If not, it is because I have completely forgotten about it and moved on to other things.

    1. The last time I lost my temper I caused an entire star system to fall into the void!
    2. Right now, a countless number of things is what I'm fed up with!
    3. The next book I'd like to read is somewhere in this stack of books sitting on my desk.
    4. A big hug from my husband is what I'm looking forward to.
    5. If you can't get rid of the skeleton[s] in your closet, leave the door open, and they will eventually find their way out.
    6. The best things I got in the mail recently were five books, four of which were completely unexpected.
    7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward going to my friend's memorial service; tomorrow my plans include adjusting to my new hair cut; and Sunday, I want to lose myself in a book and maybe start watching one of the TV series I have on DVD.

Booking Through Thursday on Friday: Writing Challenge & Frinday Fill Ins
    • Pick up the nearest book. (I’m sure you must have one nearby.)
    • Turn to page 123.
    • What is the first sentence on the page?
    • The last sentence on the page?
    • Now . . . connect them together….
(And no, you may not transcribe the entire page of the book–that’s cheating!)
Two nights before my father died, I dreamed that I was out at the bullpen with him. God it was beautiful!
    - Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel

Yeah, so I did not add anything extra to connect the two sentences together, but don't you think it works perfectly just like that? I do anyway.

    1. I love springtime in the fall! (What can I say? It's the first thing that came to mind.)
    2. A Banana is a food I love to eat for breakfast. (I often don't eat much else.)
    3. It seems I'm always searching for my glasses. (I rarely put them in the same place each time. It's becoming a family tradition now for my husband and I to search the house for my glasses before we go out.)
    4. Reading in bed is a great way to end the day. (You must try it if you haven't already.)
    5. I think I need a hair cut. (But it will have to wait until the 18th.)
    6. Ice cold Soda is what I've been craving lately. (I can't drink it anymore, and so it especially sucks!)
    7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to a warm meal followed by a good book; tomorrow my plans include making my husband go over the author panel schedule for the L.A. Times Festival of Books to see if there are any he does not want to miss this year; and Sunday, I want to enjoying the company of my animals and husband--and a good book!

    3. Splitting a few appetizers between friends sometimes is meal enough.
    4. You are someone I'd like to get to know better.
    5. The smell of flowers in bloom reminds me so much of springtime!
    6. Not too long ago, I had an especially rough day. I came home from work and was greeted by my cat and dog, both of whom followed me around the house and made sure I knew they were here for me, and that made it all better.
    7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to a home cooked meal; tomorrow my plans include taking my dog for a long leisurely walk; and Sunday, I want to do a little organizing and announce the winners for my Buy a Friend a Book Week contest.

Friday Fill Ins and Some Meme Fun

    1. Some relationships are meant to inspire songs.
    2. Josh Gracin at the House of Blues in Anaheim is the last concert I saw; it was uncomfortably crowded and the wait was way too long, but Anjin and I had a great time just the same.
    3. Spring should be getting better any minute now.
    4. Oh no! I forgot where I put the garage remote! Again.
    5. I've recently started feeling very old.
    6. Witnessing a random act of kindness never fails to make me smile.
    7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to settling in with my book and forgetting the world outside; tomorrow my plans include taking in a movie, lunch out on the town, and a trip to the hospital for more blood tests; and Sunday, I want to sleep in if the animals will let me, read to my heart's content, fit in the laundry, and catch up on Lost!

It's about time I get around to trying my hand at the six-word memoir. This was hard! Florinda and Amy both were thoughtful enough to tag me.

    1. Write your own six word memoir
    2. Post it on your blog and include a visual illustration if you’d like
    3. Link to the person that tagged you in your post and to this original post if possible so we can track it as it travels across the blogosphere
4 .Tag five more blogs with links
    5. And don’t forget to leave a comment on the tagged blogs with an invitation to play!

Bleeding heart tree hugger with chainsaw.

    Or maybe

Just one more chapter before bed.

    Or this one

Passions: Animals, Education, Human Rights, Reading.

    I can't decide!

Please consider yourself tagged if you haven't give this a try yet. I dare you.

My friend Candid Karina who does an amazing job reviewing American Idol each week (even if I don't always agree with her take) on her Cafe Karina blog, tagged me for the 123 meme. Remember this one? It's always fun to do!

    The rules...
    1. Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages).
    2. Open the book to page 123.
    3. Find the fifth sentence.
    4. Post the next three sentences.
    5. Tag five people.

From After Hours at the Almost Home by Tara Yellen:
"Drinks," Fran said, holding up her shot in one hand, her mixed drink in the other, "the elixir of forgetting."

    "Forgetting?" Lena scoffed. "Forgetting what?"
Go on, even if you have done this one before, give it another go.

Friday Fill Ins: My Cat Talks In His Sleep

    1. Contact may cause my cat to start purring.
    2. The parties hereto do mutually agree to eat a scoop of ice cream every night unless otherwise determined and agreed upon by all involved.
    3. Disney parks sure have gotten crowded.
    4. A good night's sleep sounds really good right about now!
    5. I positively adore my animals.
    6. My husband's happy dance always makes me smile.
    7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to falling fast asleep, tomorrow my plans include counting my blessings and Sunday, I want to stretch out as long as possible before the start of the new work week!

Booking Through Thursday fell by the wayside with other things going on in my life right now. I hope to participate next week. I just cannot seem to catch a break health wise. Sadder still, however, is that a friend and coworker of mine who has been battling cancer for the past couple of years is nearing the end of her fight. While her body may be failing her, her spirit is strong. She had been looking forward to coming back to work and her wedding this spring. Melyssa is one of those people who brings sunshine, a pretty smile, a ready joke, a kind word to share, and a generous heart wherever she goes. Please keep her as well as her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Edited at 9:18 a.m., 03/15/2008: The doctor upped the dosage of Melyssa's pain medication so that she would be more comfortable and be able to sleep. She passed away in her sleep late last night. The earth has lost a great person, but God has gained an angel. My prayers are with her family.

Friday Fill Ins and More 123 Fun

    1. Snowdrops are very rare around here. (At first I thought snowdrops had something to do with the white cold stuff that comes down in the mountains. We actually got a tiny bit of snow on Thursday in the city where I work. Everyone scrambled to the windows to see the foreign sight.)
    2. I'm going to have a little something for dessert now.
    3. The Rose is a song whose lyrics have meaning to me. (This was an especially difficult one because music is so important to me and many songs have special meaning in my life.)
    4. Just one sip and I fall flat on my face.
    5. Snuggled up under the covers in bed with a book and my husband and animals by my side is where I'm happiest.
    6. I believe that making mistakes is a necessary part of life.
    7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to catching up on my sleep; tomorrow my plans include skydiving sleeping in and maybe deep sea fishing taking in a movie and lunch out on the town; and Sunday, I want to enjoy the fact that Monday is a holiday!

My friend Aarti over at BookLust tagged me for the 123 Meme. Yes, I did this one last week, but it just happens to be one of those memes you can do over and over again and come up with a different response each time.

This also gives me the opportunity to thank Lynne for sending me a copy of Anita Shreve's All He Ever Wanted, which arrived in today's mail. Thanks, Lynne!

    The Rules:
    1. Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages)
    2. Open the book to page 123
    3. Find the fifth sentence
    4. Post the next three sentences

"Perhaps this would be a good day to have the painter in to finish the hallway," Edna said, putting the top of the pen to her chin. "He could work undisturbed through the late afternoon and evening."

"Yes," I said, "that might be wise."

Friday Fill In & Having a Little Friday Fun

    1. I'm looking forward to figuring out which book I am going to read next and diving right in. (It shouldn't be this hard! This is what comes from having too many choices . . . )
    2. Alaska in the summertime is a place I always wanted to visit and haven't made it there yet.
    3. I've fallen in love with my husband over and over again through the years. I do not know how I got so lucky (and no, I'm not saying this because I want to go to the bookstore this weekend).
    4. Six of one just is not enough when it comes to fresh out of the oven tortilla chips.
    5. Addiction to books, you say? I have an addiction to books? Me? Nah!
    6. The dry weather and wind crack me up! (and not in a good way--thank you to whoever invented lotion.)
    7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to cozying up with a good book; tomorrow my plans include taking in a movie and dragging my husband to the pet store to buy food for the dog and Sunday, I want to watch Lost and Chuck and get in some more reading time!

Alice tagged me for the Page 123 meme that has been floating around, and I thought this would be the perfect time to play.

Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages).
Open the book to page 123.
    Find the fifth sentence.
    Post the next three sentences.
    Tag five people.

It just so happens that the book nearest me has more than 123 pages, but page 123 happens to be the end of a chapter, and so not a full page. Thankfully, there are enough sentences to fit the criteria of this meme. Only just.

    "That'll warm ya."

Warm me? My God, it suffused me, it seeped into my bones in ways I'd never felt before.

--page 123 of Moonlight Downs by Adrian Hyland

If you want to play along and have not already, consider yourself tagged!

Dancin' Fool convinced me to offer up a glimpse of what I might look like. It turned out to be quite accurate (not really, no), and it was fun to put together (this, at least, is true!).

Friday Fill In: Oh, Weekend! How I Love Thee!

    1. Once I was finished managing the last crisis of the day at the office, I was more than ready to go home and start the weekend.
    2. I am tired of being sick.
    3. Today at work I definitely earned my paycheck--and then some.
    4. What's up with her hair? Do you think she's knows it got blown all about?
    5. If I make a mistake, I admit I am wrong and try and fix it.
    6. When I woke up this morning, I thought immediately of my last blog entry and wondered if I should change the wording on one of my 7 Oddball things least it be misunderstood. I still had twenty minutes left before my alarm went off but was unable to fall back asleep because I kept worrying about that post.
    7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to curling up on the couch with a mug of hot chocolate, watching a movie while cuddled up with the dog and cat, and waiting for my darling husband to call to say he arrived safely at his destination; tomorrow my plans include pruning my TBR collection and doing some much needed house cleaning; and Sunday, I want to spend the day reading in between loads of laundry and enjoy the evening with my husband!

    7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to the rain, some cuddling on the couch, and reading late into the night; tomorrow my plans include cleaning the house; and Sunday, I want to do nothing but read!
